Are you not feeling good enough?
Feeling unworthy?
Battling obsessive negative thoughts over and over again?
You Learned to Think and Feel This Way
Perhaps you grew up with a critical and judgmental parent who let you know on a regular basis that nothing you did was good enough. Maybe it was a teacher or other authority figure who repeatedly sent that message.
Even if you got straight A’s on your report cards, worked three part-time jobs, excelled in sports and extra-curricular activities, had lots of friends, looked great, took good care of yourself, and did everything you were told or asked to do—still, the message that kept coming your way was, “Not good enough.”
Our Relationships Reflect How We Feel About Ourselves
Nothing is more important than the relationship we have with ourselves. We can only like and love others as much as we first like and love ourselves. Unfortunately, most of our parents, and their parents, did not learn to love themselves, and, therefore, did not know how to teach us or show us how to love ourselves.
Instead, they demonstrated for us how to be critical and judgmental of self and others, especially if that was their primary experience when they were growing up. To make matters worse, we are not able to leave the negative messages behind when we leave the nest. Those critical and judgmental thoughts follow us wherever we go and “take over” in Mom or Dad’s absence, until we wise up and do something to change them.
There Is a Solution
If you find yourself bombarded with overwhelming negative thoughts, “beating up” on yourself on a regular basis, doubting yourself, feeling unworthy, not good enough, and you’re tired of the negative impact this has on your relationships, you do not need to go on living this way.
Counseling and psychotherapy can help you to stop the negativity, stop the obsessive thinking, to develop a greater sense of self-worth, and to love yourself in a way that will open you up to more happiness for you and your loved ones than you ever dreamed possible.
